Employment Growth in Ontario in November Overshadowed by Declines in Most of Canada

Statistics Canada released its monthly Labour Market Survey for November. It shows that, following a notable decrease last month, Canada’s economy lost 19,000 jobs again in November, raising the unemployment rate to 7.4 percent.  However, despite recent declines, employment still remains up 1.2 percent from November 2010.  And in Ontario, employment actually increased, and unemployment declined. Canada’s Economy Lost 54,000 Jobs in October - Primarily in Ontario

Following an increase in September, Statistics Canada reports an employment decline of 54,000 in October – all in full time, and predominantly in Ontario.  October’s loss pushed the unemployment rate up 0.2 percentage points to 7.3 percent.

Is Canada’s Jobs Market Recovery Stalling?

On November 5th, 2010, Statistics Canada published the October result of its monthly labour market survey. It seems to indicate that the job market recovery has almost stalled, at a time of the year that is normally be characterized by steady job creation. The Vicinity Jobs hiring demand numbers from October also show that hiring pulled down sharply from its peak a month ago. What is unusual this time around is that other economic indicators – such as stock price indices – point to an overall economic recovery.

Hiring Levels Still Low in Suburban Toronto

Hiring demand actually increased slightly in June compared to May in all four suburban GTA regions. However, since the hiring demand levels in May were among this year’s worst, the correction amounted for little more than a return to the flat trend that we have been seeing since the job market took a deep dive at the end of 2008. We are still not seeing signs of recovery in the Toronto area’s job markets, and we do not expect to see much in the way of recovery until the 3rd quarter of 2009. (more…)

Hiring Demand Trends in York Region from VicinityJobs.com

Research that we have done at VicinityJobs.com/FairyLakeJobs.net indicates that the ongoing recession has impacted hiring demand in York Region more severely than in most other suburban GTA communities. Our research is based on analysis of hundreds of thousands of postings for jobs in various suburban GTA communities published on all major online job boards and on a number of employer web sites.

Chances of Finding Employment in Ontario Remained Slim in February

In early February, we released the Vicinity Jobs monthly hiring index reports and expressed cautious optimism that Ontario’s job market may have bottomed already (read article). Unfortunately, the February numbers (which we just released) dashed our hopes.
