After you have completed your interview, the hiring process is still not complete. Following up after your interview can be equally as important as the interview itself. Here are some tips to make sure that your follow up makes a good impression:

  1. At the end of your interview, make sure to ask when they will make their hiring decisions so that you can follow up in a timely fashion.

  2. Alert your references that a potential employer may be calling and tell them about the position you are applying for so that they can prepare themselves for the questions.

  3. Make sure you get the name of each of your interviewers so that you can send a thank letter or email to each interviewer after the interview. You should send the letter as soon as possible. In the letter, remember to thank them for the opportunity and to remind them why you are perfect for the position. Ensure that your letter is error free and all names are spelled correctly!

  4. Follow up with your interview by telephone approximately one week after your interview. If the period of hiring was indicated to you as a short time, it is okay to call sooner. During the telephone, inquire as to whether or not they have made their selection and that you are eagerly waiting their reply. However, do not bother the employer. Continue to follow up, but it is not necessary to call everyday.

  5. Continue to job hunt despite your pending offer. This will prevent you from being discouraged if you are not offered a position, and other job offers can be used as an advantage to get the job you really want.

Following these steps after your initial interview will allow you to gain an advantage because it proves your interest and passion for the position and it shows that you are a persistent and focused individual -- and perfect for the job!
