Some people don’t think they need one, but those who have one swear by it. So why does having a portfolio become an effective job search asset? In one word – PROOF!

You can tell an employer you can create excellent promotional pieces or you can show them an example of something you have created. If I told you I create amazing promotional pamphlets would you believe me? What if I showed you a sample copy of one of those pamphlets? Or what if I told you I made comfortable Muskoka chairs out of beautiful cherrywood. Would it be more credible if I showed you a picture of my work? Better yet, allowed you to sit in the chair?

Proving you have the skills and experience necessary to be the best fit for a position by “demonstrating” you are a credible candidate, provides you with more negotiating power which might just lead you to a higher salary! A professional employment portfolio could be just the thing that sets you apart from other candidates and increases your job offers – and that is certainly the name of the game isn’t it?

So what is a portfolio? A portfolio is a collection or sample of your work, usually in the form of a binder, book, or web-based site, highlighting your work and your abilities. It goes beyond a cover letter and a résumé. A portfolio is a job hunting tool that you compile that provides employers an overview of who you are, what you do, where you’ve been, and how well you do it. Portfolios can consist of your awards, diploma’s, certificates, appraisals, referrals, testimonials etc… just to name a few! Everyone can use one!

Like any great salesperson knows, timing is everything and learning how and when to introduce your work in a professional manner during an interview is the key to using this tool for maximum benefit.

So… keep focused! ... keep positive!... and keep learning!

''At the Newmarket Employment Resource Centre, we offer a 2 hour workshop on creating your portfolios by outlining the benefits, the different types of portfolios, steps to assembling one, and how to position your portfolio effectively when you are in an interview.

Call us at 905 952 0502 to signup (space is limited!) and all the workshops are absolutely FREE!''
